You Will Be Responsible For:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides clinical assessments for psychiatric and/or substance use issues through scheduled assessments in the Assessment Center, Emergency Department assessments, and consultations to medical floors (as directed by physician order).
  • Recommends and provides appropriate referral(s) based on information obtained during assessment process.
  • Demonstrates competence in the area of risk assessment and detailed documentation supporting recommendation.
  • Effectively provides clinical information to managed care organizations during precertification and/or concurrent reviews, advocating for the patient based on clinical presentation.
  • Provides initial contact for individuals seeking assistance at the Assessment Center and initiates preliminary paperwork, including documenting accurately and completely on the Community Call Form and arranges appropriate referrals based on needs.
  • Documents detailed, accurate clinical information on the electronic medical record within the Behavioral Health Intake form, the BHAC database and in MIDAS. 
  • Accurately enters charges on BH Intake form.
  • Assesses need for follow-up contacts with patient and initiates follow-up to pursue appropriate intervention.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills when collaborating with physicians regarding patient disposition.
  • Coordinates admission to a BH program in collaboration with psychiatrists, Charge RN, and/or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) associates.
  • Maintains knowledge of protocols with agencies such as local Mental Health Centers and the district Attorney’s offices (related to involuntary commitments).
  • Provides for pager coverage and responds to pager within 10 minutes of call during scheduled shift or during “on-call” status.
  • Maintains solid clinical skills including knowledge of DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5, community resources, process of payor source identification, and short-term intervention strategies.
  • Provides consultation on clinical issues with physician, treatment teams, department personnel and hospital-wide personnel.
  • Demonstrates ability to use electronic medical record to document all aspects of patient’s treatment.
  • Assists in orientation of new team members.
  • Consult on clinical issues with physician, treatment team, manager, director and other department personnel.
  • Demonstrates ability to use electronic medical record to document all aspects of patient’s treatment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of EMTALA guidelines and acts in accordance with standards.
  • Initiates call to Managed Care Organizations, provides clinical review and obtains/documents pre-certification information.
  • Collects health benefit information and communicates to Behavioral Health Departments, coordinating information with the ongoing treatment plan.
  • Attends inservice programs of continuing education and reviews current literature as a means to evaluate and enhance current treatment practices.
  • Adheres to the standard of providing health care information to patients and their families in a calm and courteous fashion.
  • Demonstrates professional demeanor at all times, even when faced with hostile or aggressive behavior.
  • Incorporates patient, physician, customer needs and concerns into decision-making.
  •    Provides orientation to new associates and documents progress on orientation check lists. 
  •    Documents in legible manner, including signature and credentials.
  • Functions as liaison between patient, hospital and community agencies.
  • Represents Behavioral Health in a positive manner throughout SMMC and networks to promote positive relationships.
  • Maintains a professional interaction with Emergency Department personnel and inpatient floor personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality awareness during all interpersonal interactions (including phone and hallway interactions).
  • Documents in accordance with hospital, Joint Commission and CMS (Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services) standards.
  • Demonstrates initiative and flexibility in adapting to changing situations.
  • Participates in BHAC Performance Improvement (PI) process.
  • Demonstrates awareness of fiscal resources for BHAC.
  • Maintains working knowledge of budgetary goals.
  • Makes suggestions to Clinical Manager and/or Director of opportunities for increased productivity within Department.
  • Utilizes cost effective resources for supplies.
  • Identifies opportunities for special projects during times when workload is low.
  • Understands and practices the ethical standards of specific discipline.

Qualifications

What You Will Need:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Windows
  • Experience with crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of mental health and chemical dependency continuum of care including:  inpatient and outpatient programs.
  • Advanced knowledge in working with a variety of patient populations, diagnoses, and age specific populations.
  • Experience with Behavioral Health community resources and referral protocols.
  • Advanced clinical skills in assessment, intervention, and disposition of patient.
  • Experience working with cross cultural populations.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Experience with continuous quality improvement and outcomes.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Managed Care precertification process.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing
  • 1 to 2 Years of experience in Mental Health and Chemical Dependency setting

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • 2 to 5 Years of experience in Mental Health and Chemical Dependency setting

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • Kansas Registered Nurse License
  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Training – must be obtained with 90 days of employment

Job Summary:

This position is a licensed registered nurse and is a team member of the Shawnee Mission Behavioral Health Assessment Center (BHAC).  This associate provides a broad range of assessment services.  The primary job responsibility will be to assess behavioral health needs of patients and assist them in accessing needed treatment.  This position will provide for scheduled assessments through the Assessment Center, assessments in the Emergency Department, and consultations on medical floors.  This position will at times include triage and assessment of community crisis calls, coordination with physician staff, crisis intervention and initiation of treatment planning process.  Additionally, interactions with Managed Care Organizations will occur through provision of the precertification process.  This position reports to the BHAC Charge RN on a daily basis and is supervised by the Behavioral Health Clinical Manager
