You Will Be Responsible For:
  • Abstracts data from the medical record, concurrently and retrospectively. Enters data entry as required and data submits through computer file or download for:
  1. Performance Improvement projects which may be required by regulatory or accrediting bodies
  2. External Performance Improvement and Clinical Best Practice initiatives
  3. External comparative databases which may include those for specialized services such as NCDB:  NAPBC:  FCDS (State Reporting) with validation of data as required
  4. Medical Staff or committee or department review on specific aspects of patient care as requested
  • Facilitates use of data to identify opportunities to improve clinical outcomes, prevent events with the potential to negatively impact care, promote patient safety and improve hospital processes.
  • Communicates with other departments/disciplines, e.g. Medical Staff; Education; Nursing; Cancer Committees; Breast Leadership Committees; Pharmacy, Education, or Nursing, to report potential or actual quality care and/or patient safety issues identified in the course of data abstraction, concurrently and retrospectively.
  • Prepares timely and accurate reports for the presentation to members of the Medical Staff, Medical Staff committees, hospital committees, and / or Administration.
  • Educates Medical Staff members and hospital staff in Performance Improvement philosophy, tools and methods especially Clinical Best Practice Initiatives.
  • Develops or improves processes related to data abstraction, submission, reporting, or other processes within the Performance Improvement Department. 


What You Will Need:

  • Must be currently certified as Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR Certification in Health Information Management (RHIT, RHIA); Nursing (RN, LPN) or other Allied Health preferred. BSN prepared strongly preferred.   At least some familiarity with programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Cerner, Outlook, Electronic Registry Systems (ERS) or other cancer data software systems;   Florida Cancer Data Systems or other State Reporting requirements; and ACOS/COC is required.
  • Must obtain Florida Cancer Data Systems Abstractor ID within 60 days of hire.
  • Experience in Performance Improvement preferred but not required.   


  • Associate’s degree in Health Sciences, Health Information Technology or equivalent experience is required.
  • At least two years of experience working in cancer registry /data management department within an accredited cancer program or have completed 2-year AHIMA Education Program for Cancer Registrars.    
  • Advanced competencies with computerized cancer registry database, electronic medical record, word processing, database, spreadsheet design and integration software required (i.e., Cancer Registry databases, Microsoft Office Suite applications).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information, Nursing; Health services preferred.
  • Multi-facility experience preferred.


  • Certifications as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) through the National Cancer Registrars Association
  • Abstractor ID Number from Florida Cancer Data Systems within 60 days of hire.


  • Registered Nurse (RN);  LPN
  • RHIT; RHIA – Registered Health Information Technicians/Administrators
  • Other allied health degree 

Responsible for implementation, management and maintenance of a comprehensive program of data collection and analysis of clinical care for internal and external benchmarking to improve patient outcomes and hospital processes (Commission on Cancer; NAPBC;  FCDS; National Cancer Data Base;  CDC, etc.).  Conducts on-going review of medical care to determine need for physician review or committee review or to establish that care rendered was appropriate.  Identifies opportunities for improving care or preventing events that have a negative impact on patient care.  Collects data for aggregation for defined Performance Improvement initiatives.  Prepares reports of data for Medical Staff and hospital committees.  Participates in or facilitates PI Teams.
