Work Hours/Shift:   Full Time / Day

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Performs analytical activities related to: 1) microscopic evaluation and reporting of negative gynecological thin layer slide preparations and 2) microscopic evaluation and formulation of an opinion for the pathologist of abnormal gynecological thin layer, non-gynecological, and fine needle aspiration slide preparations. Correlate current cases with previous cytologic specimens where indicated.
  • Performs assigned pre-and post-analytical activities related to tests assigned, including specimen collection and processing, quality control, equipment maintenance, inventory control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing procedures.
  • Performs and results molecular testing and/or ancillary testing from the ThinPrep vials and correlates with morphologic findings.
  • May assist in collection of data for research or publication of papers. Ability to read and evaluate published professional literature.
  • Supports Cytopreparatory Technicians and Clinical Laboratory staff by providing leadership and mentoring, including resolution to customer service issues within guidelines.
  • Supports cross-departmental partnerships and communication amongst Pathologists, Pathologists' Assistants, hospital staff and clients taking immediate steps to correct, follow through and report any mistakes or errors to department manager or assistant manager.
  • Participates in and has knowledge of Performance Improvement activities, including evaluation of any new procedures and equipment, data collection, and/or creation of various reports and attends and participates in scheduled department and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Adheres strictly to AdventHealth Compliance Plan and the rules and regulations of applicable regulatory authorities; protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times.
  • Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), handwashing and hazardous chemical handling. Utilizes understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene Plan and Infection Control policies. Employee job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from point of generation to designated secure storage area. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
Qualifications
What You Will Need:
  • Associate’s degree in Biological Sciences  
  • Successful completion of a 12-month Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Cytotechnology program
  • Technical skills related to processing, staining and cover-slipping, including the handling and microscopic evaluation of gynecologic thin layer, irreplaceable fine needle aspirations, and fluid specimens
  • Ability to assist Pathologist, Radiologist, or Endoscopist in the slide preparation and collection of samples for ancillary testing during fine needle aspirate procedures, and perform RAPID on site evaluation of adequacy
  • Knowledge of all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, rules and guidelines such as State of Florida, and related agencies, as well as AdventHealth Corporate Compliance Plan
  • Read text and numbers, and ability to communicate in English with patients, staff and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective and professional manner
  • Ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match, and problem solve
  • Ability to learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices
  • Ability to work independently and handle confidential information with little or no supervision
Job Summary:

The Cytotechnologist performs anatomical pathology procedures as licensed. Requires the exercise of independent judgement under minimum supervision.  Work customarily involves procedures, which require a high degree of theoretical and practical knowledge, and expertise in licensed area(s). Adheres to the AdventHealth Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.
