The Lead Diagnostic Medical and Vascular Sonographer, under general supervision, performs general Sonography and Vascular Sonography procedures in accordance with department protocols while adhering to all rules and regulations of applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Oversees daily schedule and is the first point of contact for all issues including patient flow, image quality and other matters pertaining to patient care when Supervisor or Manager are not available.  Rounds with staff quarterly (performance tracers) and performs monthly staff image quality assurance (QA) as assigned. Assists with the training and orientation of new employees. Ensures equipment is properly maintained and performs ultrasound equipment quality control (QC) testing including daily monitoring of GUS (Glutaraldehyde User Station) and/or Trophon units where applicable. Orders clinical supplies ensuring adequate par levels. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

  • Clinical Competence: Performs a full range of diagnostic general and vascular Sonography procedures. Utilizes knowledge and skills for age-specific factors necessary to perform safe and effective procedures on patients of all ages (neonate/infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatrics). Acquires knowledge and skills through in-service, continuing education and/or experience. Adapts to new technologies and protocols and assists in developing the knowledge and competency of coworkers and students.
  • Image Quality and Documentation: Consistently obtains the highest quality scans possible in relation to patient body habitus and/or prep status as observed by Radiologists and Ultrasound Manager. Follows proper exam protocols as outlined in department Policy and Procedure manual. Utilizes two patient identifiers to confirm patient/exam accuracy before administering exam. Reviews all images on Ultrasound machine or in PACS and thoroughly fills out Ultrasound worksheet in a timely manner. Rescans patient as requested by Radiologist. Is open to critique of exams by Radiologist, department Manager and/or department Educator.
  • Data Processing: Utilizes computer system to update exam status, cancel/update orders as needed.  Ensures charges match procedure completed. Confirms proper exam/patient assignment in PACS prior to tech completing the study. Corrects erroneous accession numbers in PACS when needed.  Notifies Radiologist Facilitator (RF) and transmits required worksheet and requisition for all after hour’s cases.
  • Safety and the Environment of Care: Operates and maintains Ultrasound equipment in a safe manner.  Adheres to all infection control standards. May handle and dispose of hazardous material (Hazmat) waste. Completes initial training (prior to handling Hazmat waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and disposal of Hazmat waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. Follows guidelines for proper use of GUS and/or Trophon unit. Washes hands before and after every patient encounter.
  • Department Meeting Attendance: Attends department meetings consistently and promotes positive dialogue with respect to department objectives. Listens and is responsible to understand all agenda items. Attends all other meetings as required. Participates in department surveys and patient satisfaction initiatives.

Additional Lead Duties:

  • Sets priorities and completes work within expected time frame. Serves as first point of contact for all issues including patient flow, image quality and other matters pertaining to patient care when Supervisor or Manager are not available. Checks e-mail daily and effectively communicates with department Supervisor and Manager. Posts memos and/or passes information / handouts / rewards as needed. Maintains department service recovery items and assures the use of this resource when appropriate. Performs Quarterly Team Tracers and regulatory rounding as needed to assist Supervisor or Manager. 
  • Serves as a “super user” for all ultrasound equipment in assigned department. Maintains the ultrasound equipment by assisting Supervisor/Manager with placing work orders for repairs and ensuring completion. Performs bi-annual equipment QC on ultrasound machines. Completes daily monitoring of Cidex and GUS unit and ensures completion of written logs and maintenance of the GUS unit. Responsible for ordering, stocking, and maintaining supplies for the Ultrasound department. 
  • Exceptional knowledge of all Information Systems used in the Ultrasound department. Frequently monitors service tools for broken exams and fixes any errors. Performs monthly staff Image QA as assigned. Assists with the training and orientation of new employees including 30 and 60-day exam checklist review.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
  • Knowledgeable in Abdomen, Abdominal Doppler, Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/Gyn), Small Parts, Vascular and Interventional Sonographic procedures
  • Ability to master new tasks related to computer software, picture archive, and communication system (PACS)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with people of various diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to meet deadlines and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Basic EKG knowledge
  • Ability to perform Venous Ultrasound Doppler
  • Knowledge of AGFA PACS and associated equipment
  • Computer skills in word processing and email such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Graduate of Ultrasound Program


  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related field


  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • ARDMS and/or CCI credentials to include:
    1. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer RDMS Abdomen (AB)
    2. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer RDMS Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) OR
    3. American Registry of Radiologic Technologies RT (S)
    4. Registered Vascular Technology RVT Vascular Technology (VT) OR
    5. Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) OR
    6. American Registry of Radiologic Technologies RT(VS)
    7. One additional registry specialty examination to include: only Breast (BR), Fetal Echocardiography (FE), Musculoskeletal Sonographer Examination (MSKS), or Pediatric Sonography (PS)
