You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Manages and is knowledgeable of the policies and procedures as related to the clinical area.
  • Meets all responsibility requirements of clinical laboratory technologists as defined in state law.
  • Adheres to all requirements of state law.
  • Assists the section supervisor in the daily operation in any or all areas of the histology and cytology sections as assigned.
  • Is able to solve most problems and handle difficult situations with little or no supervision.  Has written and oral communicative

       abilities to comprehend technical material and communicate with medical professionals.

  • Practices clinical laboratory science in the specialty of histology, which means technologist is responsible for the examination materials or specimens taken from the human body to provide information or materials for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease or the assessment of a medical condition.  This includes the preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic phases of such examinations.
  •  Performs clinical laboratory examinations as well as clerical duties as needed primarily in the histology section of the laboratory.

May be required to perform certain duties in the cytology area of the laboratory depending on the scope of the laboratory’s

activity and availability of personnel.  Typically, these duties include certain clerical and preanalytical functions.

  •  Performs clinical laboratory examinations on tissue.  Performs histological clinical laboratory examinations.  Prepares, processes,

embeds, cuts and stains tissue preparations of material derived from the human body to provide material to a pathologist for the use and the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

  •  Receives written or electronic requests from physicians for routine or special laboratory tests. 
  • Interacts with and/or performs clinical laboratory examinations on patients of all ages.
  • Sets up and adjusts laboratory instrumentation as required after proper instruction, must be able to operate any scientific instrument and perform any required procedure.  Must be able to use independent judgment and knowledge to perform related tasks.
  •  Must possess sufficient academic, technical, clinical skills and knowledge to evaluate, troubleshoot, research and resolve day-to-day problems which arise or special projects as assigned by the section supervisor.
  •  May be required to oversee the work of new technicians and trainees.
  • In the absence of the section supervisor may be designated to serve as acting supervisor of the section, with all incumbent duties of the section supervisor.
  •  Near visual acuity is required to read detailed instructions and to examine specimens.
  • Must possess technical reading skills in order to be able to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • This is a staff-level position reporting directly to the section supervisor.  May be required to supervise technicians, trainees and any other assigned to the section at the request of the section supervisor.
  • Has knowledge of and understands current CAP and Standards for the Histology department.
  • Represents the patient(s) best on the healthcare team. Promotes teamwork with physicians and all health care providers.
  • Assists in departmental, hospital and community in-services/education when assigned.
  • Involved in the review and planning of laboratory improvements.
  • Upholds professional standards of performance and conduct.
  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement for clinical area and participates in assigned meetings

Qualifications

What You Will Need:

  • Associates Degree in Applied Science (AAS) from a certified program/intuition with a major in Medical Laboratory Technician or Histology. 
  • Board-registered or eligible for registry as a histotechnologist or histotechnician (clinical laboratory scientist) or specialist in histology. 
  • Preferably board-registered with one of the national registries associated with laboratory practice (NCA, ASCP, etc.).
