Nurse Manager/Educator - Full Time - Daytona Beach

Location- 301 Medical Memorial Parkway, Daytona Beach 32117

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Nurse Manager (NM) is a registered professional nurse who has the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout their hospital experience. The NM functions in a dual role as NM and Educator and assumes 24-hour accountability to the Pediatric Department nursing unit. The NM/Educator is directly responsible to the Department's Director of Nursing (DON) or Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and is responsible for the continual operation of the Pediatric nursing unit. The NM is able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, creativity, and has the knowledge to manage resources to achieve quality performance, positive employee relations, and compliance with hospital guidelines. The NM is skilled in coaching, motivating, mentoring, and leading a professional and technical team in the delivery of services for our patient population. The NM assures quality of care is delivered for our patients and demonstrates effective stewardship of scarce resources. The NM is the change agent for the assigned areas of responsibility and is responsible for implementing any changes that the unit is required to undergo.  The NM actively participates in outstanding customer service, including service to patients, families, physicians, and other contacts, and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. The Educator has responsibility for staff orientations and education in all areas of Pediatric services.  

Qualifications

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manager: Responsible for managing all personnel on nursing unit(s).
o Conducts interviews and hires best qualified candidate to fill vacancies.  Candidates can be new employees, promotions, or transfers within the facilities. 
o Follows all hiring policies and collaborates with, Human Resources and education to facilitate hiring and orientation.
o Maintains high levels of employee engagement and job performance by providing recognition and opportunities for learning.
o Performs annual employee appraisals on all unit staff.
 Ensures that staff clearly understands expectations.
 Identifies needed areas of improvement throughout year.
o Coaches/counsels/disciplines employees when appropriate in a professional, objective and timely manner.
 Identifies problems, investigates incidents & failure to comply with Policy & Procedures.
 Collaborates with Director to determine disciplinary action and action plans for improvement.
o Keeps anecdotal notes on staff. 
• Promotes professional growth of staff. 
o Identifies strengths and weakness.
o Utilizes strengths to increase self-esteem and growth.
o Provides growth/educational opportunities for staff.
o Identifies education needs of staff and collaborates with educational department for program development.
o Provides an environment conducive to learning for staff and for nursing students.
• Demonstrates creative and safe staffing management.
o Develops unit schedule within budgetary limitations, while balancing staff to provide safe and effective levels of care and distributes at least 10 days before start date.
o Identifies and implements creative staffing to meet need of unit within productivity limits.
o Collaborates with peers and staff coordinator regarding distribution of personnel throughout nursing departments.
o Makes rounds to assess nursing skill mix and assignments in relation to patient acuity and care needs.
• Maintains productivity level.
o Articulates concept of nursing hours per patient day and approved targets.
o Explains/justifies variances in HPPD based on unit variables.
o Maximizes productivity and quality of patient care within established target hours.
o If applicable, utilizes acuity system to provide appropriate nursing care hours.
o Develops teamwork within staff.
o Supports networking and cooperation with other units and departments to provide quality care for patients

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Effective communication skills, ability to deal well with people, ability to problem solve, ability to confront/resolve issues, ability to motivate others, ability to plan, organize, and direct the activities of others. 
• Demonstrates leadership skills and a commitment to education as a methodology for promoting continuous quality improvement in the delivery of patient care and services. 
• Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word and Excel).

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:
• Specific knowledge and skills as delineated by the unit of employment 
• Knowledge of regulatory agency requirements.
• Previous teaching experience in formal and/or informal settings. 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• RN from a program of nursing.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.    
• Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).  
• Minimum two (2) years prior nursing supervisory or Educator experience. 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
• Masters degree preferred.
• Minimum two (2) years Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing experience.


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
• Current State of Florida or multi state license as a Registered Nurse. 
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.  
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:
• Advanced preparation or National certification in clinical specialty preferred
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) instructor preferred to support Pediatric Services
