Pathologist Assistant -  Texas Health Huguley- operated as joint venture between Texas Health Resources and AdventHealth

Work Hours/Shift:

Part Time

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Properly identifies, processes, and prepares tissue specimens for gross examination

  • Performs gross examinations and take sections for histology under the supervision of a pathologist

  • Determines identity and suitability of specimens when received, according to procedure manual, as documented on requisition 100% of the time

  • Assigns received specimens on appropriate accession number and in a timely manner; prepare them according to the procedure manual, as observed by the pathologist

  • Immediately prepares sections and stains frozen section specimens according to stated procedure, as observed by the pathologist

  • Assists pathologist with autopsy eviscerations and organ dissection

  • Takes and identifies macro and microscopic photographs of specimens as directed by pathologist

  • Assist other departments and physicians in determination of most appropriate specimen submission and fixation methods

  • Prepare materials for conferences

  • Aid in training of histotechnician students

  • Prepares solutions and stains as specified in procedure manual, as evidenced by control slide results

  • Prepares and packages specimens, tissues, blocks and slides to be sent out in a timely manner as observed by the pathologist with no more than 4 variances per year

  • Applies appropriate billing codes as described in the procedure manual 

  • Maintains specimens in an orderly fashion making them easily accessible 

  • Files specimen daily after they have been sectioned with no more than 5 variances per year

  • Discards specimens no longer required according to procedure guidelines, as observed by the pathologist with no more than 8 variances per year

  • Maintains equipment and supplies to ensure smooth operation of the department

  • Orders on weekly basis, supplies needed in department as observed by the Director with no more than 3 variances per year

  • Replenishes department supplies as needed to ensure adequacy of inventory with no more than 3 variances per year

  • Properly maintains and cleans department and equipment on a daily basis, as documented in maintenance records

  • Performs other duties as assigned


Qualifications

What You Will Need:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory instrument management
  • Ability to interact in a team environment, promoting a collaborative environment
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industry
  • Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
  • Up-to-date knowledge of pathology laboratory tests and ordering processes
  • Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Graduate degree in a relevant scientific field
  • One year of experience required

  • ASCP Specialist Certification in Pathologists’ Assistant

Job Summary:

Pathologist Assistant receives, accessions, codes, examines and takes sections of all tissue specimens received in the pathology department.
