You Will Be Responsible For:
  • Assists in the organization and coordination of patients in order to promote efficient flow of patients for department.  The objectives and goals are to provide quality and safe patient care.

  • Assists with staff in department as a good team player.

  • Is able to define the mechanism used to address ethical issues in patient care e.g., Living Wills, Durable Power of Attorney.

  • Uses forms appropriate to the task and demonstrates a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Responds promptly and effectively to patient's and guest's needs.

  • Strives for excellence in performing assigned duties.

  • Receives results of lab, EKG, x-rays, etc on patients and places all reports in charts, preventing delays, cancellations and medico-legal complications due to missing information.

  • Informs physician of abnormal results as soon as possible.

  • Notifies anesthesia RN when patient is available for pre-op interviewing.

  • Notify departments regarding patient needs by hand-off report or phone calls.

  • EKG is performed accurately and efficiently as ordered by physician.

  • Provides information requiring follow-up to other staff members prior to leaving the work area for the continuity of quality health care.

  • Plans and organizes area activity and operational tasks to assure maximum productivity.

  • Conducts patient care activities with respect for patient privacy and rights and maintains confidentiality.

  • Identifies life-threatening situations and responds immediately according to protocol, to activate the health team.

  • Responsible for the Nursing process and Patient Education.

  • Initiates appropriate i-Connect charting to identify patient care needs and patient/family learning needs prior to surgery or procedures.

  • Give pre-operative instructions to patients and their families.

  • Educates the patient regarding procedures and tests and other hospital policies.  Patient will acknowledge understanding of hospital admissions and proposed procedures as evidenced by documentation in i-Connect.

  • Assess for possible patient needs at discharge, e.g. high risk needs, social needs, etc., and refer as necessary to Risk Management, Patient Representative, Social Services/Discharge Planner, chaplain and Home Health.

  • Documents and communicates data e.g. allergies, medication, etc., per medication reconciliation process.

  • Involves family or significant other in the preadmissions process when possible.

  • Collaborates with physician and other clinical disciplines when necessary.

  • Assists in decreasing the financial and legal liability to the hospital thereby increasing the quality of patient care and an awareness of cost-effective patient care.

  • By following the chain of command, reports potentially compensable events to Care Manager, Risk Management and/or Patient Representative accurately and appropriately.

  • Maintains the confidentiality of patients, medical and nursing staff as well as department information. 

  • Assists in Infection Control and P I Activities as needed.

  • Associate remains flexible to changing systems, is expected to demonstrated quality and effectiveness in work habits and treat staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect.

  • Understands the Computerized Physician Order entry process and proficiently uses the electronic medical record for retrieval of patient information.

  • Understands computer downtime procedures.

  • Monitors Electronic Medical Record for new physician orders and diagnostic results.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


What You Will Need:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.

  • Licensed to practice as a RN in state of Texas or in a qualifying compact state

  • One year clinical nursing required

  • Previous Pre-Surgery (Pre-Assessment Testing) experience preferred

Job Summary:

The Pre-Surgery RN provides nursing care for a certain group of patients under the supervision of the Care Manager in compliance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act.  Nurse responsible for patients learning needs and provides pertinent teaching.  Responsible for utilizing nursing knowledge, organizational and communicating skills to coordinate preadmission diagnostic procedures for patients in an efficient and safe manner.  Responsible for following policies and procedures of Texas Health Huguley in order to preserve the hospital administration's commitment to quality in patient care.
