You Will Be Responsible For:
SERVICE:
  • Annually participates in the evaluation of the patient safety evaluation system to ensure a highly reliable system approach to patient safety, quality, and the journey to zero harm
  • Demonstrates commitment to patient safety and protecting patients and providers by advocating safe practices and policies
  • Holds paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public in the performance of professional duties and escalates patient safety concerns to appropriate leadership, up to and including executives, with honesty and integrity
  • Leads performance improvement teams on local projects with a focus on reliability and sustainability of evidence-based practices
  • Develops improvement initiatives focused on enhancing patient safety and minimizing waste

CLINICAL:

  • Prepares accurate tracking and trending of patient safety work product and related activities
  • Facilitates use of data to identify opportunities to improve safety, prevent events with the potential to negatively impact patient care, promote a culture of patient safety and improve hospital processes
  • Develops reports to effectively communicate findings. Presentation of information is clear, concise, and tailored to the level of the user. 
  • Communicates opportunities for improvement through risk assessments, hazard vulnerability analysis and evaluation of emerging patient safety practices
  • Advises and educates leadership on current/emerging patient safety requirements
FINANCE:
  • Considers the financial implications, safety implications, and clinical outcomes when making recommendations, evaluating technology and products, and developing policies and procedures
  • Incorporates fiscal assessments into program evaluations and/ or reports
  • Maintains compliance with departmental budget

Qualifications
What You Will Need:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of evidence-based best practices and improvement strategies for reducing patient harm
  • Ability to apply advanced statistical methods and tools, use statistical techniques to describe the data, calculate risk-adjusted rates, establish internal benchmarks and report significant findings to key hospital and region stakeholders
  • Ability to influence and persuade teams, up to and including the executive level, to build consensus within and across stakeholder groups (high level negotiation skills)
  • Advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, Excel, PowerPoint and database programs and advanced skills in analysis, problem solving and troubleshooting of databases and software
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and issues to facilitate data needs
  • Motivational and team building skills
  • Ability to provide professional presentations to executive leadership teams, including reports for complex data analysis
  • Facilitation of various PI methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean, PDSA, etc.) Preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field, Computer Science, Nursing, Health Care Administration or Business. 
  • Organizing or leading formal or informal improvement teams

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • Active Registered Nurse licensure or other clinical licensure

  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
  • Team STEPPS Certification
  • LEAN Performance Improvement Certification
  • Six Sigma Performance Improvement Certification
 
Job Summary:

The Patient Safety Specialist is a qualified individual who provides direction and support for patient safety, quality improvement, and learning systems for safety culture and high reliability under the oversight of the risk management leadership team.  The specialist is responsible for providing a planned, systemic approach to identifying, designing, measuring and monitoring patient safety process improvement activities. The manager has a comprehensive understanding of data and analytic tools as well as health care information systems and technology with an advanced ability to apply these methodologies to extrapolate data, analyze and report in a meaningful format to inform and drive regional performance improvement activities. Functions as the local project liaison for the Patient Safety Organization through responsibility for the accuracy and transfer of patient safety work product entry into the patient safety evaluation system. The scope of work includes education and training on patient safety programs and AdventHealth learning systems for the region; data management for the investigation, analysis and monitoring of patient safety/harm prevention activities; and compliance with regulatory standards/guidelines. Functions as a key member of the regulatory, risk, quality and patient safety teams. Supports project development, coordination, and evaluation efforts.
