You Will be Responsible for:



Consistently demonstrates through behavior the Park Ridge Health Pillars. Adheres to the ANA Code of Ethics, the ANA Scope and Standard for Nursing Practice, the State of North Carolina Nurse Practice Act, and the AONE Nurse Executive Competencies


1. Human Resource Management – Monitors performance of the staff and takes corrective action for improvement as appropriate. Uses independent judgment to:

• Selects applicant for interview and hire and assures appropriate orientation.

• In collaboration with Human Resources Department, suspend or invoke other discipline for work infractions, performance deficiencies and conduct violations by exercising supervisory authority.

• Evaluates supervised employees, recommends promotion of supervised employees, and recommends bonuses and awarding of other discretionary rewards to supervised employees.

• In collaboration with the Human Resources Department and Director of Surgical Services, terminates supervised employees, where appropriate.

• The assignment of employees to particular duties or activities or to authorize and assign overtime to employees where appropriate.

• The adjustment/resolution of complaints, concerns, and problems of supervised employees regarding work assignments, hours of work overtime scheduling, and other work-related matters.

a. Assures diversity of staff is positively fostered in the work environment. Actively involves all groups in shared decision-making where appropriate.

b. Uses skill in effective conflict management and is able to reach a common goal and resolve conflicts

c. Creates a work environment that addresses the physical and emotional needs of the staff and one that is conducive to retention of the staff.

2. Financial Management – Understands health care economics, public policy, and finance as it pertains to the delivery of patient care.

a. Understands the broad impact of reimbursement on the delivery of patient care services, including but not limited to Medicare, Managed care, Medicaid, third party providers, challenges to current health care policies, and key legislative initiatives at the local, state, and national level.

b. In coordination with the Director of Surgical Services develops, analyzes, and interprets unit-department based budgeting. Maintains staffing and scheduling, and resource utilization within budgeted targets for the unit.

c. Fosters patient, family, staff, and physician satisfaction. Understands the impact of dissatisfaction on the business goals of the unit.

d. In coordination with the Director of Surgical Services is involved in capital budgeting; may be required to produce a cost benefit analysis to justify requested equipment.

e. Utilizes information systems to support business decisions.

3. Performance Improvement – Demonstrates familiarity with the performance improvement model of the organization.

a. Champions performance improvement activities on the unit through problem identification, assessment, data gathering, change implementation, and evaluation of outcomes.

b. Is actively involved in all aspects of patient safety on the unit including but not limited to: sentinel event monitoring and reporting, root cause analysis, TJC (regulatory agency) requirements, incident reporting, medication safety policies and procedures.

c. Assures workplace safety for the employees and demonstrates knowledge of regulatory requirements for workplace safety, i.e., CMS, OSHA, TJC, HFAP etc.

d. Supports continual process improvement by sponsoring and/or participating in the activities.

e. Ensures that practice changes, as a result of performance improvement activities, are implemented.

f. Sets quality standards and initiatives for the department through collaboration with the Director of Surgical Services and implementation of evidence based practice where appropriate.

4. Critical Thinking/Technology – Utilizes critical thinking skills in the performance of their duties. Demonstrates and understanding of technology utilized in the organization.

a. Plans, organizes and leads the unit through application of critical thinking skills

b. Utilizes data driven decision making, incorporating evidence into the decision process

c. Employs strong problem solving skills and utilizes defined models for problem solving.

d. Thinks of the system as a whole when analyzing data and making decisions

e. Is able to utilize critical thinking skills in persuading others

f. Assures resources and talent are available to support staff in utilization of the supply and medication management systems of the unit

5. Leadership and Clinical Practice Knowledge – Provides leadership for the effective and efficient operation of the Operating Room. Assures clinical practice is of the highest quality.

a. Leads the employees in a manner which develops the employee to their optimal level of performance

b. Mentors all employees to reach full potential employees

c. Assures appropriate application of clinical knowledge in the care of all patients

d. Plans for delivery of care to the patient and evaluates the outcomes of care delivered in relation to clinical effectiveness

e. Sets clear expectations in the delivery of clinical practice

f. Assure adherence to models of care established for clinical practice

g. Fosters inclusion of support services in the delivery of care

h. Ensures that the patient experience is the focus of all services

6. Communication and Relationship Building – Utilizes relationship in influencing behaviors on the unit

a. Utilizes active listening, feedback, inquiry, and validation in communicating with others in relation to meeting the goals of the unit.

b. Understands the functions of a group process. Is able to facilitate effective groups for the delivery of nursing care and for collaboration with other disciplines.

c. Supports academic relationships through welcoming students to the unit and assisting in their training process.

d. Promotes, nurtures, and maintains interdisciplinary relationships in order to assure patient-focused care and better patient outcomes

e. Maintain appropriate collaborative relationship with patient, families, staff, vendors, physicians, other disciplines, and other contacts.

f. Works collaboratively to define acceptable behaviors from staff, physicians, and other disciplines within the organization and adheres to these acceptable behaviors

7. Professionalism – Demonstrates a professional persona in their work

The Operating Room Nurse Manager (ORNM) is a registered professional nurse who has the most direct impact on the care and services that patients and families require throughout their hospital experience. The ORNM is directly responsible to the Director of Surgical Services and is responsible for the continual operation of the Operating Room. The ORNM is able to demonstrate critical thinking skills, creativity, and has the knowledge to manage resources to achieve quality performance, positive employee relations, and compliance with hospital guidelines. The ORNM is skilled in coaching, motivating, mentoring, and leading a professional and technical team in the delivery of services for our patient population. The ORNM assures quality of care is delivered for our patients and demonstrates effective stewardship of scarce resources. The ORNM is the change agent for the Operating Room and is responsible for implementing any changes that the unit is required to undergo. The ORNM actively participates in outstanding customer service, including service to patients, families, physicians, and other contacts, and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

What you will need:

• Current BLS or obtain BLS upon completion of orientation


ACLS and PALS preferred

• 5 years of OR experience


Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) required at time of hire or enrollment in BSN program within 1 year of hire.


Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) highly preferred

• Professional certification from a national organization

• Prior management experience


• Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse
