Work Hours/Shift:

You Will Be Responsible For:
  • Complies with the Employee Code of Conduct
  • Assures department compliance with all federal, state and local laws; rules and government regulations
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform patient assessments/interventions by identifying, physical, psychosocial and developmental needs and adapting interventions accordingly
  • The Chaplain’s role will be in the areas of comforter, liturgist, witness, resource person, and counselor with the specific intent to help others, through words, acts, and relationships, to experience as fully as possible the reality of God’s presence and love in their lives
  • Maintains an ecumenical spirit within the hospital and sense of hospitality for people of all faiths
  • Establishes positive working relationship within the hospital among all members of the health care, patients, and families
  • Respects patient privacy, confidentiality and dignity.
  • Maintains open communication with area clergy (with the patient’s permission) concerning the needs of their parishioner
  • Creates positive image by demonstrating a professional manner in all encounters
  • Communicates with courtesy when interacting with internal or external customers, in person, electronically or on the telephone.
  • Chaplain will provide ministry of presence for patients and/or families in times of crises as a witness of God’s love and concern
  • Makes rounds and visits patients as their needs for pastoral services is determined and provides pastoral counseling as needed. 
  • Assists patients and families to cope with fears and anxieties resulting from illness. 
  • Administers the Sacraments to patients upon request –referring to appropriate clergy as needed
  • Assists patients facing death
  • Comforts patient’s family and friends at the time of illness or death.
  • Demonstrates evidence of continuous professional development by”
  • Identifying own learning needs, and seeking opportunities for self-growth and career advancement
  • Attending annual mandatory in-services and required meetings and continuing education
  • Communicates all problem or potential problems and concerns related to confidentiality to the Director
  • The Chaplain shall also respond on an on-call basis to immediate and emergency medical crises as they happen and the attending hospital staff deem the need for pastoral care/support
  • Prioritizes the multi-patient task-list on Cerner for daily patient consults
  • Per diem scheduling as determined by the manager of the Spiritual Care department
  • Available for week night and weekend (24 hour) On Call rotations as scheduled; with the stipulation that if unavailable for scheduling more than twice in a year without adequate notice or rationale; job status will be evaluated.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested by the Lead Chaplain
  • Fulfills commitments to accomplish department goals
  • Prioritizes work effectively and manages time well


What You Will Need:


    • Bachelor’s degree in Religion/ Theology or Pastoral Care
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Minimum of one year demonstrated ability to work as a team member in an ecumenical setting


Master’ of Divinity or graduate degree in related field.


    • A new hire may begin employment provided the facility has the ability to facilitate the successful completion of the required AHA BLS program prior to any patient contact. This may be achieved using web-based training with voice-assisted manikin skills check off (ie: Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) Program or Heartcode) or instructor-led training.
    • Ordained Minister, Commissioned. Licensed Clergy.
    • One unit Clinical Pastoral Education (work toward second unit in a year)


    • Residency at accredited Clinical Pastoral Education site with ACPE  
    • two CPE units—for Per Diem Chaplains. Full time Chaplain 4 units (may advance from two units within 3 years.)
    • Board Certification through the Association of Professional Chaplains

Job Summary:

The Chaplain is a member of the health care team who provides for the pastoral needs of patients, families, and staff.  Through professional training in the areas of theology, spirituality, worship, and counseling, assists patients to understand more fully life’s events as they relate to their spiritual and emotional well-being.
