Job Description:

• Assists at patient bedside for Fine Needle Aspirations. 

• May prepare and process cytology specimens for staining and examination by pathologists.

• Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots instrumentation for safe routine operations.

• Orders and maintains sufficient inventory of supplies in the section.

• Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling.

• Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.

• May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.

• May receive and accession tissue samples into the lab computer system, ensuring accuracy of paperwork.

• May process and prepare samples for both send-out and in-house testing.

• Prepares cassettes, processes, embeds, cuts tissues, and prepares slides. Performs immunohistochemical staining, documents quality control, and maintains instrumentation and supplies. •Conducts analytical activities related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping, and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical, and body fluid specimens.

• May act as a preceptor for new employees and histology students/interns while providing leadership and mentoring to histotechnicians, histotechnologists, and laboratory support staff. Files and maintains Histology and Cytology Blocks and slides.

• Utilizes the lab computer system to accession and bill all section specimens. 

• May manage tissue disposal and waste disposal records according to regulatory agencies. 

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Familiar with histology lab instrumentation and processes. [Required]• Critical thinking skills. [Required]• Computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office. [Required]• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. [Required]• Must be detail oriented. [Required]• Ability to prepare tissue specimens to confirm patient diagnoses. [Required]• Ability to perform complex histological procedures, record and analyze data, and maintain/repair instruments. [Required]• Up-to-date knowledge of specimen handling, ranging from accession to specimen storage. [Required]• Knowledge of medical terminology. [Required]• Knowledgeable in troubleshooting and problem resolution.
• Ability to support continuous laboratory service improvement to ensure timely preparations for quality diagnoses. [Required]• Ability to maintain safety standards and comply with government regulations in laboratory practices. [Required]• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industry. [Required]• Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals. [Required]• Demonstrated technical skills and aptitudes related to specific histology laboratory testing. [Required]• Ability and willingness to work independently as well as in a team environment. [Required]• Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, etc. [Required]• Ability and willingness to adapt to change. [Required]

Education:
• Associates [Required]• Bachelor's [Preferred]

Field of Study:
• Florida – Associate's in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR education equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR qualified and served as testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. [Required]• Multi-State Division – Bachelor's in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR education equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR qualified and served as testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. Work Experience:
• 1+ years' experience as a histotechnologist [Preferred]
