Job Description:

Performs pulmonary diagnostic testing, including spirometry, DLCO, lung volumes, body plethysmography, airways resistance, respiratory muscle forces, trans-esophageal pressure, and portable spirometry, adhering to department policies and procedures. Explains tests and techniques to patients before administering pulmonary tests and determines the quality of patient performance by observing behavior and effort during testing maneuvers. Terminates patient testing upon notice of patient discomfort, troubled medical status, or inability to perform the test, and notifies the manager or medical staff. Performs metabolic measurements and complete exercise testing, including indirect calorimetry, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, and 6-minute walks. Operates, calibrates, and performs routine testing for quality assurance, maintaining testing equipment such as Collins Pulmonary Function/Plethysmography systems, bronchial provocation dosimeter, metabolic cart, treadmill, and bike ergometer. Maintains daily and monthly blood gas laboratory maintenance, including proficiency testing, linearity testing, correlation studies, daily critical value reporting compliance validation, and routine daily maintenance of all blood gas analyzers. Documents and reports all testing performed, including pertinent physician interpretations, technical billing, Athena documentation, Powerchart documentation when necessary, and proper physician billing. Provides staff competency validation training for blood gas laboratory competencies for new-hire orientation process for all new respiratory clinical staff. Other duties as assigned. Administers breathing and oxygen procedures such as nebulizer treatments and prescribed medications, documenting appropriately and completely. Prepares, tests, and sets controls for pulmonary equipment, breathing devices, and oxygen supply. Assesses patients’ response to treatments, modifies treatment if necessary, and monitors patients during treatments, reporting any unusual reactions to physicians or appropriate staff members. Cleans, sterilizes, checks, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Proficient in performing Arterial Blood Gas Puncture & Analysis [Required]• Medicated Aerosol Therapies, Bronchial Hygiene Therapies, Lung Expansion Therapies [Required]• Pulmonary Rehabilitation instruction and patient monitoring exercise physiology related to chronic pulmonary disease. [Required]• Independently performs pulmonary diagnostic testing, to include: Spirometry, DLCO (diffusion testing), Lung volumes/Body Plethysmography, Airways Resistance, Respiratory Muscle Forces, Portable Spirometry, adhering to department policies and procedures, to assist the physician in detecting obstructed or restrictive lung disease and aid in the early detection of pulmonary dysfunction. [Required]• Demonstrate appropriate knowledge to instruct, coach patients to perform diagnostic pulmonary function test and technique to patient before administering pulmonary test. [Required]• Determines quality of patient's performance and test by observing behavior and effort during testing maneuvers. [Required]• Terminates patient testing upon notice of patient discomfort, troubled medical status, or inability to perform test and notifies manager or medical staff. [Required]• Independently performs metabolic measurements and complete exercise testing, to include: Indirect Calorimetry, Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Testing, Oxygen titrations, and 6 Minute Walks. [Required]• Explains testing to patient along with the proper medical consents are signed and most recent history and physicals are in the chart. [Required]• Blood Gas Laboratory regulatory compliance requirements [Required]• Routine Oxygen Delivery, Devices, and Oximetry [Required]• Hemodynamic Monitoring and Arterial Cannulation [Required]• Utilize and adapt to State of the Art Technology, Computer Systems and Applications [Required]• Effective Oral and Written Communication. [Required]• Current BLS, ACLS certification (or obtain within 90 days of employment.) [Required]
