Professional growth can begin with a new opportunity and the courage to pursue it. For AdventHealth team member McKaela Cooper, moving from Sterile Processing into Surgical Technology offered a way to continue learning, challenge herself and make a greater impact on patient care.

Reaching that goal required discipline, careful planning and the support of leaders who encouraged her along the way. In this team member spotlight, McKaela shares what inspired her career journey, how she balanced her responsibilities and what she would tell others considering their own next step.

1. What sparked your interest in Surgical Technology?

“I started my career in Sterile Processing and was given an opportunity to grow into Surgical Technology. I’ve always been someone who wants to continue learning, expanding my knowledge, and challenging myself professionally. I never want to become stagnant in my growth or education, and Surgical Technology allowed me to take the next step in my career while making a greater impact on patient care.”

2. What preparation/steps did you take to get there?

“Honestly, my preparation was pretty simple but required discipline. I carefully scheduled my workdays around dedicated study days and made sure to set aside specific amounts of time for each section of my coursework and exam preparation. Staying organized and committed to a routine helped me balance work, school, and personal responsibilities while working toward my goal.”

McKaela’s experience shows how a clear goal and a consistent routine can help make continued education more manageable. Just as important was having encouragement from those around her as she worked toward the next chapter of her career.

3. How has AdventHealth helped you continue your education/career?

“AdventHealth leadership has been incredibly supportive throughout my educational journey. They consistently encouraged and motivated me to pursue my goals and never made me feel limited in what I could achieve. They genuinely want to see their team members grow and succeed, and they are strong advocates for continued learning, professional development, and career advancement.”

4. What advice would you have for other team members who may be interested in going back to school?

“Choose you every time. Going back to school can feel intimidating, but growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Whether you’re looking for a career change, a new challenge, or simply want to continue learning, it’s never too late to invest in yourself. The life you want is built one decision at a time, so why not make a choice today that your future self will thank you for?”

McKaela’s journey is a reminder that meaningful career growth happens one decision at a time. By embracing a new opportunity, committing to her education and accepting support along the way, she was able to take the next step in her career while continuing to serve patients in a meaningful way.

For other team members considering a new challenge, McKaela’s message is simple: Believe in what is possible, make time for your goals and choose to invest in yourself.
