Job Description:

Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA)

Shift: Days

Location: AdventHealth South Overland Park

Role Summary:

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) provides specialized nursing care throughout all phases of the peri-operative process. When a qualified physician is unavailable, the RNFA may serve as the first assistant during surgical procedures when the registered nurse possesses the appropriate knowledge, education, competency, and technical skills.

This role assesses patient needs, plans and implements individualized care, evaluates outcomes, and collaborates with the surgical team to provide safe, comprehensive, and compassionate care.

Key RNFA Responsibilities:

  • The Registered Nurse First Assistant performs specialized nursing care during the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases of care.

  • The RNFA serves as the first assistant during surgical procedures within the scope of education, training, competency, applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies.

  • Assists with pre-operative and post-operative patient assessments and communicates relevant findings to the surgical team.

  • Prepares operating rooms with the appropriate instruments, equipment, supplies, and resources based on surgeon preference cards.

  • Performs surgical counts according to policy and immediately reports discrepancies.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, supplies, equipment, and anticipated surgeon needs.

  • Assists with updating surgeon preference cards as needed.

  • Assumes unit responsibility when delegated by the nursing manager or director.

  • Recognizes and responds efficiently and appropriately to emergency situations.

  • Recognizes abnormal laboratory, blood gas, and radiologic findings and understands their clinical significance.

  • Maintains appropriate traffic control in the operating room.

  • Protects each patient’s privacy, safety, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.

  • Initiates incident reporting processes when indicated.

  • Uses appropriate communication channels when reporting information, raising concerns, or supporting process changes.

  • Promotes positive relationships within the department and across the organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Circulating and scrub skills.

  • Ability to prepare surgical suites using surgeon preference cards.

  • Knowledge of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment.

  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team.

  • Clear communication and strong anticipatory skills.

  • Cognitive, psychomotor, and affective behaviors that demonstrate accountability and responsibility for identifying and meeting the needs of peri-operative patients.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.

  • Manual dexterity and the ability to lift, pull, and push equipment, heavy instrument sets, and patients.

Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of nursing experience in in an OR Unit.

  • At least two years of circulating and/or scrub experience in a multi-specialty surgical setting.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in acute care nursing and peri-operative nursing practice.

  • Experience with computerized clinical documentation.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, anticipation, and critical-thinking skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, nurses, physicians, surgeons, and other health care professionals.

  • Strong physician and surgeon relationship skills with a team-focused approach.

  • Knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards.

Education:

Required- Associate's of Nursing

Preferred- Bachelor's of Nursing

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Certified Registered Nurse First Assist (CRNFA)

  • Basic Life Support – CPR Cert (BLS)

  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR)

  • This position comes with a $10,000 sign-on bonus, based on applicable eligibility requirements.

  • Additional pay is available for eligible specialty certifications and participation in the AdventHealth clinical ladder program.

  • Our clinical ladder program recognizes professional growth, advanced clinical skills, leadership, education, and contributions to patient care. Eligible team members have opportunities to advance professionally while earning additional compensation.
