Job Description:
Shift: M-F, 7a-3:30p
• May assist with maintaining and upgrading department equipment or computer systems and writing or reviewing procedures.
• Supports cross-departmental communication and partnerships with pathologists, pathologist assistants, hospital staff, and clients.
• Maintains workspaces in a neat, organized, and properly supplied manner.
• Performs and oversees analytical activities and troubleshooting related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, histologic staining, frozen sectioning, coverslipping, and handling of tissue and surgical specimens.
• Provides leadership and mentoring to biotechnicians, histotechnologists, and laboratory support staff, and assists in training new employees and histology students/interns.
• Facilitates workflow to maintain optimal operations and resolve customer service issues within guidelines.
• Participates in laboratory and hospital performance improvement activities, including evaluating new equipment and procedures.
• Promotes team building, employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and a culture of safety for employees and patients.
• Monitors tissue specimens for microscopic examinations and perform diagnostic/analytic specimen testing.
• Completes quality control testing, equipment maintenance, and troubleshooting practices.
• Ensures analytic accuracy, precision, and sensitivity in test methods.
• Conducts pre- and post-analytical activities related to anatomic pathology tests, including specimen collection and processing, quality control, equipment maintenance, inventory control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing.
• May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
• Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling.
• Demonstrates understanding and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to adequately inspect equipment settings to ensure adherence with safety standards [Required]• Ability to maintain records and prepare reports/correspondence related to the managed care services [Required]• Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industry [Required]• Ability to effectively communicate appropriately and effectively in written and verbal English with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals [Required]• Technical skills and aptitudes related to anatomic pathology, procedures and processes performed in department or work area assigned. [Required]• Able to read text and numbers in English, and comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve, under supervision. [Required]• Able to apply accurately learned computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices. [Required]• Mature, independent professional judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within Hospital guidelines and applicable regulations. [Required]• Able to make appropriate decisions in stressful situations and handle multiple priorities and projects. [Required]
Education:
• Associate [Required]• Bachelor's [Preferred]
Field of Study:
• Florida – Associates' in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR education equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR qualified and served as testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. Required
• Multi-State Division – Bachelor's in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR education equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR qualified and served as testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. Work Experience:
• 2+ years of experience as a histotechnologist or in a histology laboratory setting [Required]• 5+ years of experience in histology [Preferred]
