Job Description:
- Serves as the Respiratory Care shift leader, acting as a clinical resource and patient safety advocate, and fills in for Respiratory leadership when needed.
- Assesses patients, sets goals, and collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to develop and adjust care plans based on diagnostic data and clinical evaluation.
- Completes all required training programs and demonstrates proficiency in advanced respiratory procedures including HFOV, HFJV, and Nitric Oxide therapy.
- Practices standard precautions, enforces safety protocols, and ensures accurate documentation and charging of procedures.
- Responds to Code Blue and airway emergencies, performing CPR and advanced airway management techniques including intubation and tracheostomy support.
- Delivers respiratory therapies per protocols, including inhaled medications, bronchial hygiene, lung expansion, and inhaled gas management.
- Manages invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, including initiation, transport, and weaning, and monitors advanced therapies such as heliox and nitric oxide.
- Performs hemodynamic procedures, assists with catheter insertions, and manages intra-aortic balloon pumps and other advanced cardiovascular support systems.
- Leads process improvement initiatives, mentors staff, supports department goals, and assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of a Clinical Specialist or Supervisor.
- Obtains and analyzes blood gases, performs quality control, and sets up monitoring systems such as oximetry, apnea, and ETCO2; performs EKGs as needed.
- Maintains equipment and supplies, ensures regulatory compliance, and performs waived and non-waived point-of-care testing with documented competency.
- Performs campus-specific duties including a-line maintenance, CVP catheter support, pulmonary diagnostics, and emergency care for pediatric and infant patients.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent team leadership and communication skills, including documentation in the patient care record and to adapt to computer systems and applications. [Required]
- Ability to ensure infection control. [Required]
- Enhanced critical thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate changes in patient condition and respond rapidly and appropriately [Required]
- Expertise in patient assessment, evaluation, and revision of treatment plans through use of prescriber care plans and/or protocols [Required]
- Airway management skills, including insertion and maintenance of a patent airway, including endotracheal intubation [Required]
- Ability to initiate, operate, manage, and liberate complex therapeutic interventions, including conventional and non-conventional modes of ventilation, including High Frequency Ventilation [Required]
- Ability to provide optimal respiratory support including administration of oxygen and other inhaled gasses, administer medications including inhaled vasodilators and nebulized opioids (adult care) to the respiratory system, lung expansion, and bronchial hygiene therapy [Required]
- Retains knowledge and skills of Advanced Respiratory Therapist or long-term ventilator care therapist. [Required]
- Ability to perform ABG Puncture, analysis, arterial cannulation, and hemodynamic monitoring [Required]
- Ventilator patient transportation [Required]
- Knowledge and skill to care for the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in a health care delivery system (All campuses except for Children’s Hospital) [Required]
- Knowledge and skill to care for a patient in the Emergency Room [Required]
- For Children’s Hospital: Knowledge and skill to care for neonatal, pediatric, and adolescent patients in a health care delivery system [Required]
- Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Management and Initiation (campus specific) [Preferred]
- Leadership experience [Preferred]
Education:
- Associate's [Required]
- Bachelor's [Preferred]
Field of Study:
- From a Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Science program
- In Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Science program
Work Experience:
- 2+ years of Respiratory critical care experience [Required]
Licenses and Certifications:
- Basic Life Support – CPR Cert (BLS) [Required]
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support Cert (ACLS) [Required]
- State Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) [Required]
- Active NBRC Credentialed Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) [Required]
